Apparently 70 clicks IS too fast to drive in front of Magnetic Hill School. The Anglophone East District Education Council commissioned an expert report using the province's own rules to find out if there should be a reduction in the speed zone on the 126 in front of the school...and the expert said YES. Among the recommendations?  There should be an immediate reduction in the speed zone in that area to 60 km/h...and a further drop to 50 in the coming years will probably be needed. Some of the other results of the report: a flashing speed radar sign to alert speeding drivers, and putting white strobe lights on the many buses that enter and exit the school. The expert also questioned the placement of some of the signage in the area...the big moose sign is apparently "distracting".  The report has been sent to the transportation department and they tell the Times & Transcript that they're going to look at it.

Power crews from New Brunswick have arrived in Florida to help with the cleanup after Hurricane Irma. About 6.5 million customers had no power in the state yesterday and experts say that it's going to take weeks, not days to get power restored in a lot of areas. About 350 linemen and other power workers from here in the province have joined about 50,000 workers from across the US and Canada to aid in the effort. CTV is reporting that the charity group Samaritan's Purse left Moncton yesterday with a tractor trailer load of supplies to help residents get back on their feet.

You can have a say in how the art money for the new downtown centre gets spent. Today at 5pm there's going to be a presentation in the Moncton City Hall lobby...you'll get a chance to see what the four short listed artists have come up with for art that will go in the outdoor plaza...and later council will vote on what gets picked. The city could end up spending about $200,000 on the project.

A company started by six Mount A students has gotten a $20,000 prize from McCain Foods because they came up with a way to make furniture and other products out of potato peels! It's science stuff that I don't really understand...but basically they came up with a process to make a particle board out of the potatoes and that can be turned into furniture, flooring, and ceiling tiles! The students are working on getting a patent for their potato peel invention...
