We had a thunderstorm overnight here but nothing like what ripped through the Acadian Penninsula last evening...power poles snapped in half like twigs all over the Northeast, laying across roads and blocking drivers. In Caraquet the tiles from the roof on the mall blew off the building onto cars on the street! There are still over 4,000 homes and businesses there with no power this morning.

Not a great start to the Causeway bridge job...yesterday an excavator toppled over and sunk into the mucky marsh...they had to basically build a little road into it to haul it out. We've had about 120 mm of rain this month so you can imagine that area is pretty much hip wader territory...and your average construction excavator weighs 60-70,000 pounds! #WhoopsieDingo

It's time for that yearly survey where they ask if Greater Moncton residents would like to see Moncton, Dieppe, & Riverview become one city. Between April 19 and May 4, Corporate Research Associates asked 400 adults in the three municipalities if "all things considered, do you completely support, mostly support, mostly oppose, or completely oppose the amalgamation of Dieppe, Riverview and Moncton into a single municipal unit?" 59% of all respondants said yes...28% said no...and 6% said they didn't know. If you break it down by community things get a little hazy...Only 38% of people in Riverview support the idea...while about 65% in Moncton and Dieppe would like to see amalgamation.

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 20th) is National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day! Police will have checkstops set up across the province to stop impaired drivers. S/Sgt. Eric Larose of the Codiac RCMP says: "There is no excuse for driving while impaired. If you are consuming alcohol seek alternate ways to get home such as public transit, taxi or call a friend," says . "This simple decision may result in saving a life." The RCMP also encourages members of the public to call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver. The RCMP will also be looking for people not wearing their seatbelts, drivers using handheld devices and those who are driving aggressively.
